Course Aim:

By the end of the training course staff will have an understanding of both the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards 2007 including any changes or updates in the laws & legislations.

Course Duration:

6 Hours

Objectives:

  • Understand how the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) 2007 work together
  • To be able to explain what mental capacity is
  • To know the 5 core principles of MCA
  • Be able to relate MCA to Safeguarding issues
  • To give staff confidence to know the difference between restriction and deprivation of liberty
  • To recognise and understand MCA 1&2 (the two stage process)

  • Background to DoLS
  • What is DoLS
  • Who is affected by DoLS
  • DoLS Applications, standard and urgent and authorisation

Throughout this course candidates will also have the opportunity to view and discuss short films relevant to the subject matter.
