Course Aim:

To update the skills of those who need to need to renew their First Aid at Work Certificate

Course Duration:

2 Days

Who Should Attend:

Personnel who wish to renew their First Aid at Work qualification before their current certification expires

Objectives:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the emergency First Aider
  • Understand how to assess and assess a casualty
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • Understand how to manage a casualty with external bleeding & hypovolaemic shock
  • Manage a casualty with minor injuries
  • To be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with chest injuries
  • Be able to administer First Aid for a casualty with burns or scalds
  • To complete written assessments
  • Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
  • To be able to administer First Aid for asthma or hyperventilation and recognise the contrasting difference between the two conditions
  • Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with Anaphylactic shock
  • Be able to provide First Aid to a casualty with angina or heart attack
  • Be able to provide First Aid to a casualty with a suspected stroke
  • Be able to provide First Aid to a casualty with injuries to bones & joints
  • Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with a suspected spinal injury
  • Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with suspected head injury
  • Be able to conduct a Secondary Survey
  • Be able to provide First Aid to a casualty with suspected diabetes
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with epilepsy
  • To complete appropriate multiple choice papers and provide feedback

  • Establishing Consent
  • Accident report forms

Incident & Casualty Assessment:

  • Scene Survey
  • Primary Survey
  • When to call for help

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation:

  • The need to commence CPR
  • Open airway and check breathing
  • Demonstrate CPR
  • Child & Baby CPR awareness
  • Managing a casualty that has regurgitated during CPR

Recovery Position & Management of Seizure:

  • Assess Consciousness
  • Importance of Recovery Position
  • Recovery Position demonstration
  • Manage a casualty who is in seizure

Choking:

  • Identify a casualty with partial and complete airway  obstruction
  • Adminsiter First Aid to a casualty who is choking

External Bleeding & Shock:

  • Identify types of external bleeding
  • Signs & symptoms of shock
  • Provide First Aid for a casualty in shock
  • Managing external bleeding
  • Identifying First Aid equipment
  • Safe use of equipment
  • How to control severe external bleeding

Minor Injuries & Eye Injuries:

  • Managing small cuts, grazes & bruises
  • Managing small splinters
  • Identify eye injuries
  • Administer First Aid for eye injuries

Chest Injuries:

  • Different types of chest injuries
  • Administer First Aid for a chest injury

Burns & Scalds:

  • Recognise factors that affect severity of burns or scalds
  • Administer First Aid for burns

Written Assessments:

  • Complete Multi choice assessment

Poisons:

  • Identify ways poison enters the body
  • Corrosive & non corrosive poisons
  • Information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty affected with sudden poisoning

Asthma:

  • Physiology of asthma attack
  • Signs & Symptoms
  • Treat someone who is having an asthma attack

Anaphylaxis:

  • Common triggers for Anaphylaxis
  • Recognis Anaphylaxis
  • Administer First Aid for a casualty suffering from Anaphylaxis

Angina & Heart Attack:

  • Physiology for the heart
  • Physiology for Angina, signs & symptoms
  • Angina attack treatment
  • Heart attack signs & symptoms
  • Heart attack treatment

Stroke:

  • Physiology of a Stroke
  • Signs & symptoms
  • Treatment

Injuries to Bones & Joints:

  • Recognise suspected fractures, dislocations
  • Administer First Aid for fractures, dislocations
  • Recognise suspected sprains & strains
  • Administer First Aid for strains & sprains

Spinal Injuries:

  • Recognise suspected spinal injuries
  • Administer First Aid for suspected spinal injuries

Head Injuries:

  • Recognise susepected concussion, cerebral compression & skull fracture
  • Administer First Aid for suspected concussion, cerebral compression & skull fracture

Secondary Survey:

  • Casualty history
  • Head to toe survey

Diabetes:

  • Diabetes & purpose of insulin
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Signs & symptoms
  • Treatment

Epilepsy:

  • Define epilepsy
  • Partial and absence seizures
  • Generalised seizures and treatment
  • Time limits for calling 999

Written Assessments & Course Closure:

  • Multi choice assessment paper
  • Course evaluation
  • Course closure
